Agatha Christie's Dysgraphia

Many of us know Agatha Christie as the legendary writer behind some of the world’s most beloved mystery novels, including Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. But did you know Christie faced significant learning challenges, including dysgraphia and possibly even dyslexia? Growing up, she often referred to herself as the “slow one in the family” and found writing and spelling to be particularly difficult. In fact, her dysgraphia made it so hard for her to write by hand that she often struggled with tasks as simple as balancing her own checkbook. 🕵🏻‍♀️

Christie was homeschooled, and her family didn’t expect her to learn to read until age eight. But young Christie defied those expectations by teaching herself to read by age five. A born storyteller, she began writing down her ideas by the time she was eleven, and she even published stories in her local newspaper. Her love for crafting mysteries led her to create Hercule Poirot, who debuted 100 years ago, marking the start of her career as one of the best-selling authors of all time.
